As a guide dog raiser for the past year, I raise Penny (Right), a 1-year-old Labrador Retriever. My family also has Lily (Left), a 2-year-old Golden Retriever. I first started raising guide dogs after seeing a group of Southeastern Guide Dogs (SEGD) on a weekend trip to the local Farmer's Market. I had always been moved by impactful stories of visual impairment after an accident, and even guide dogs who saved lives during the 9/11 attacks. After expressing interest, I began an application and studied training techniques, learning how to use training collars and teach loose leash walking as procedure for a guide dog. Soon, I started training and raising Penny!
Familiarizing Penny to various surroundings is important. Here is some of the training I use as a guide dog raiser:
Monthly Outing - Penny leads the group of guide dogs as we practice loose leash walking on the sidewalk.
Airport- Introducing the guide dogs to the airport as it serves to practice guide dog procedure with lots of people, and guide dogs need to practice sitting inside of a plane. She passed through security without even a collar!
At Home - Teaching house manners and basic commands is important—don't cross the gate until we give the cue!
Road Trip - We took Penny to a popular hiking area while on a road trip, introducing her to new surroundings. Watch her restraint with all of these strangers!
Staircase Training - Practicing fundamental loose leash walking but on the staircase—a difficult task!
Fundraiser - Our booth at a mall store to inform shoppers about our organization, and collect donations and fundraise a cut from store-bought items.
